Teachers can activate a set of lessons for students using Lalilo in a non-native language.
This is specifically targeted to emergent bilingual students: students who do not speak the language or very little.
To activate it for a student in need, go to the student settings and click on the Foundational Vocabulary toggle for that student.
This will put the student on a path to learn the most essential vocabulary they need. Once the Foundational Vocabulary lessons are all validated, the student will go back to their normal Lalilo path.
The unit combines literacy and vocabulary to support learners in acquiring essential Tier 1 vocabulary for the school environment. The unit consists of 12 lessons and four read-aloud books that provide both instruction and practice on thematic Tier 1 vocabulary words. The targeted vocabulary focuses on social and instructional themes including school, the classroom, school supplies, lunch, recess, action words, the body, and feelings.
The teacher can follow the student's progression on the Lesson View, under Vocabulary, in the Foundational Vocabulary section.
For students who do not have the Foundational Vocabulary toggle activated, it is not necessary to validate those lessons to complete Lalilo.
Which languages does this unit cover?
English OR French, depending on the language of the class.
For classes that have their language set to English by the teacher, activating the toggle for a student will activate the English Foundational Vocabulary unit.
For classes that have their language set to French by the teacher, activating the toggle for a student will activate the French Foundational Vocabulary unit.
When a teacher activates the toggle, are the Foundational Vocabulary exercises offered to the student before or after the Placement Test?
As soon as a teacher activates the unit, it gets offered to the student even before the Placement Test (unless they have already taken the PT before).
Can teachers deactivate the Foundational Vocabulary unit before the student completed all the corresponding lessons?
Teachers can deactivate the Foundational Vocabulary setting whenever they want, even before the student has completed it. If they chose to do so, then the student will go back on the usual Lalilo path. If the teacher later decides to reactivate the setting, the student will start again where they stopped (they won't have to start learning all the Foundational Vocabulary from the beginning again).
Can only emergent bilingual students complete the unit?
No, any student in need of Tier 1 vocabulary instruction and practice can complete the unit. The unit is also a great resource for diverse learners in need of this support. Students with prior classroom exposure to color words and pronouns are ready to begin the unit.
Is it possible to go to the Assignments tab and assign some of the lessons from this unit?
No, the Foundational Vocabulary unit is made as a coherent sequence of 12 lessons. It is possible to activate the entire unit, but not individual lessons from it. Therefore, the lessons from this unit are not accessible from the Assignments page.
